Beyond Basics: Late Summer/Fall Beekeeping
August 21, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
This is a 3 hour online class taught in two parts:
Part 1: Sunday, Aug. 21st, 7-8:30pm
Part 2: Sunday, Aug. 28th, 7-8:30pm
You know how to test and treat for varroa mites and have overwintered a hive(s), but you want to learn more about how to help your bees!
August – October is the most stressful time of the year for bees in the SF Bay Areas, because the food supply is uneven and mite levels sky-rocket. This class will focus on practical tips for protecting your bees, keeping their brood in the bottom box, being effective with mite treatments, looking at brood for disease and future queen failure, feeding (when/how much/what) and more! We’ll cover why mite treatments could fail (or are they?). We will also delve into some of the whys through bee biology and current mite research.
Instructor: Jennifer Radtke has been keeping bees in her backyard for 17+ years, and has developed the beekeeping education program at the BioFuel Oasis. She served 3 years as vice-president of the Alameda Co Beekeeping Association. She has written an online book and teaches a bee mentorship on Bay Area Urban Backyard Beekeeping.
