Chickens: Beyond the Basics
September 30, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Backyard chickens can be an integral and quirky part of any *ecological* garden.
We’ll start with some basics—selection, shelter, feed/water, health and composting.
But we’ll go further, centering chickens as dynamic producers (eggs + manure)
and hard-working allies. Chicken-curious or afficionado, don’t miss this chance
to gather with your greater east bay community!
Here’s what you’ll find in the H.E.A.L. garden…
A 1/10 th acre system featuring (5) 1-year-old hens
A selectively free-ranging flock
A resilient watering system
Two-stage manure composting
Secure shelter/coop/run design
Deep mulching in the enclosed run
Diverse annuals, CA natives, perennials and fruit trees
An 1100-gal rain harvesting set up
Fellow gardeners to connect with, and more….
An *ecological* garden, says Toby Hemenway, “…connects one organism—people—to their
environment. Such gardens both look and work the way nature does.” Gaia’s Garden
