Swarm Prevention (Beekeeping)
January 29, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
This online class is in 2 parts:
Part 1: Sunday, Jan. 29th, 6:30-8pm
Part 2: Sunday, Feb. 5th, 6:30-8pm
The Bay Area has a particularly long swarm season. Swarm prevention begins in February and continues through June. Be prepared! This class shows you how to keep ahead of your bees’ expansion and keep their brood nest open, so they don’t swarm. We’ll dive into bee biology and the natural urge for the bees to reproduce (swarm). This class will touch upon organizing your hive (e.g. where to move frames so they get the honey capped quickly, so you don’t have a multitude of uncapped honey). Lastly, we’ll cover how to catch a swarm.
We will touch upon splitting your hive in this class but not go into the details/how-to. We highly recommend you also take a class on Splitting Your Hive in March/April, as that is an effective way of keeping your hive from swarming especially as the spring stretches on.
You will receive recordings of the classes to download and watch in future years.
Instructor: Jennifer Radtke has been keeping bees in her backyard for 18+ years, and has developed the beekeeping education program at the BioFuel Oasis. She keeps up with her bees’ growth in early spring and splits her hives every year at the beginning of April (& sometimes a second time at the end of May). She mentors beekeepers through her business Learn from the Bees.
