Planning for the Year Ahead in Beekeeping

January 9, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Stay one step ahead of your bees by planning for 2022!

Why Plan Ahead? One example is queen replacement. If your queen fails & the new queen doesn’t mate, your hive will die. If your queen is getting old and you plan ahead, you can have backup plans so this doesn’t happen.

Participants will receive a checklist so they can make a solid plan for queen replacement, expansion, & even vacations, so your bees stay healthy! In this class we’ll cover:

  • why and when you may want to replace your queen
  • how to plan for expansion, including more bees/hives, more beeswax frames, and more honey
  • planning a longer vacation without worrying about your hive

Keep in mind that it’s helpful to keep an extra hive for at least part of the year, so if one of your hives die, you won’t be without bees. We’ll also cover how to have a second backup hive for part of the year.

This class will be particularly helpful for beekeepers who want to expand their hives, and do it with the season/weather so it’s easy.

Instructor: Jennifer Radtke has been keeping bees in her backyard for 17+ years, and has developed the beekeeping education program at the BioFuel Oasis. The photo is one of her queens, bred by Randy Oliver in spring of 2019.
